Two Years in the Making

Some things shouldn’t be rushed.

Nearly two years ago, we began with a simple idea: to create a collection of makeup brushes that felt as considered as the objects we choose to surround ourselves with every day.

What followed was a process of refinement.

We studied shape, weight, balance and proportion. We reconsidered the curve of a handle, the density of a brush head, the softness of each fiber and the way every brush felt as it moved across the skin. Samples were made. Tested. Changed. Then changed again.

Because a beautiful brush means very little if it doesn’t perform beautifully.

Our final collection of seven brushes was designed to be purposeful rather than excessive. Each shape earns its place-created to work intuitively with creams, liquids and powders while making the ritual of getting ready feel effortless.

The bristles are made from ultra-fine, 0.06 mm vegan microcrystalline fibers, selected for their softness and performance. Each brush head is hand-shaped to achieve its intended form. The handles are crafted from Hemu wood and finished in a matte black lacquer, paired with an aluminum ferrule for a balance that feels substantial without feeling heavy.

But the details you may never consciously notice were just as important as the ones you will.

The way the brush rests between your fingers.

The resistance of the fibers against the skin.

The proportions of the handle.

The contrast of cream bristles against matte black.

For two years, we kept returning to one question:

Can it be better?

Only when the answer became no were we ready to put the Maison James name on it.
